Fatal shooting blamed on 'hello' to a woman
Relative of victim says boyfriend got upset

A relative of the man shot and killed Sunday night at a Huntsville restaurant said the shooting happened after the victim innocently said hello to a woman who was with the shooter.

Marcus White, a cousin of Tanqueray "Tank" Lavonacheke Beavers, 21, of Athens, said Beavers spoke to the woman when he entered TGI Friday's on University Drive with a group of friends and cousins.

The woman was with Jamal Roydrick Woods, 21, whom police charged with murder in the shooting death of Beavers, police said.

"(Beavers) just spoke to her when he went in and kept on going," White said.

Beavers grew up with and went to school in Athens with the woman, who police said was Woods' girlfriend.

About 30 minutes after Beavers spoke to the woman, White said, Woods came to the bar where Beavers and the others were sitting and asked Beavers how he knew the woman.

Beavers replied that the woman was his cousin, but when Woods asked the woman, she said they were not cousins, White said.

That's when Woods said something to Beavers, pulled out a pistol and shot Beavers in the head, White said. Police Sunday night said the weapon used was a 9 mm pistol.

Also shot during the incident were Thurston Duran Turner, 27, and Autora Frias Rogers, 24, both of Athens, who had accompanied Beavers to the restaurant, police said. White said that after shooting Beavers, Woods "went down the line" and shot Turner in the face and then shot Rogers.

Police said William Timothy Reliford, 33, of Hazel Green was also shot in the incident. White said Reliford was not part of the group that included Beavers.

Investigators have not released information about the condition of the three wounded men, and a Huntsville Hospital spokeswoman said she had no information she could release about the men.

Initial police reports Sunday night said that two people died from gunshot wounds in the incident, but police on Monday revised that to one person dead and three wounded.

Woods was caught by police in a car in south Huntsville several hours after the shooting, which happened at about 9:10 p.m. at the restaurant at 4935 University Drive.

Woods and three of his friends left the table and ran out of the restaurant, police said. Woods left in his car. The three men with him were tracked by a police K-9 team to a nearby hotel, where they were detained and questioned.

Woods was taken into custody a few hours later. After questioning, he was booked into the Madison County jail on a murder charge, police said.

The investigation is continuing, and further charges could be filed, police spokesman Wendell Johnson said.

Beavers was a former All-State basketball player at Athens High School, where he graduated in 2004.

Impossible. having a firearm in a bar is against the law - no one would ever do that. Also, I think murder is against the law too, no way that actually happened.

my take of this, more people should carry, the SOB would have been dropped on the spot and at least gun owners would have the ammo that guns also stopped it from going further.

2nd man dies from wounds in T.G.I. Friday's shooting
    Wednesday, December 27, 2006
    By KEITH CLINES

Thurston Turner of Athens was 27; one still in critical

A man who was among four men shot at T.G.I. Friday's restaurant nine days ago became the second victim to die.

Thurston Duran Turner, 27, of Athens died Tuesday afternoon at Huntsville Hospital, where he had been since the Dec. 17 shooting, said his father, Wyman Turner.

Contacted at his home, Turner said Tuesday night that he couldn't talk about his son's death at the moment.

    "He passed on," Turner said.

Huntsville police said late Tuesday night that they have not been notified of any change in Turner's condition.

Charges against the accused shooter, Jamal Roydrick Woods, 21, of Huntsville, probably would be upgraded to capital murder when police confirm Turner's death, police spokesman Wendell Johnson said.

Woods had been charged with one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder.

The charges would be changed to two counts of capital murder and two counts of attempted murder because of Turner's death. Capital murder charges would apply because more than one person died from one incident.

A capital murder conviction carries a penalty of death or life in prison without parole.

Tanqueray "Tank" Beavers, 21, of Athens died at the scene from a gunshot to the head. Autora "Tory" Rogers, 24, of Athens and William Timothy Reliford, 33, of Hazel Green were also shot at the restaurant.

Rogers was in critical condition late last week at Huntsville Hospital; Reliford was released from the hospital early last week.

Turner, who was shot in the face, underwent surgery last week. Wyman Turner said last week that his son graduated from Tanner High School, worked construction, was a good athlete and a fine Christian.
