Do I go with the cheaper car that I would chip and put I/E on and be done with it, or go for the more expensive AWD wagon that is a lot faster stock?

    :hs:

    Putting 10k down on either.

Why is this even a question?

The Golf is front wheel drive, and about as reliable as asking Stevie Wonder for pointers on hitting a bullseye when playing darts.

If you're simply looking for straight line speed, I guess a Golf GTI 1.8T would be the way to go, but there are far better choices for straight line nonsense.

Where do you live? If its anywhere that gets snow, I'd say go for the WRX, even the STi if you have the extra 6k (believe me, its worth the difference, can you say torque?). I have to say though, I have had a bad taste in my mouth for newer VW's.. build quality went out the window. If it was an older one, that decision would be really hard to make.
