I am looking into trading in my '03 dodge ram. I want better gas mileage. Would you guys get a Honda Civic or a Mazda 3. I like the gas mileage on the Honda but like the 33 extra horsepower that the mazda 3 has. And if I get a civic, you think 2 door or 4 door?

That is in my mind too, but they won't deal on those. So far I think I can get the best deal on the civic 4 door.

    You have one? A TC?

I don't know about the Mazda, but here are some things that are/were problems on my '02 Civic:

Exhaust manifold cracked. Dealer didn't want to fix under warranty because stoopid asian engineers decided to integrate the catylitic converter with the exhaust manifold and cat's aren't covered under extended warranty.
After 3 visits & complaining they finally replaced it.

Hydraulic clutch master cylinder sqeaks even after Honda replaced it.

Groan in right front wheel. Sounds like wheel bearing is shot.

Material on pass. side door panel has lifted off of panel.

    Trunk release stuck. Repaired.

A couple of annoying rattles that come & go.

    The good:

Great gas mileage, 40+ mpg hiway.

    Low maintenance/cost of ownership.

I heard that tC's paranomic moonroof can rattle and squeak. Scion was, when I last checked, working on a fix apparently. The fix should be out by now but just a red flag that you should look into.

i'm a long-time Honda fan, i've had 3 civics now back-to-back... all of which were show-only vehicles. a couple of months ago i was looking for something else, test-drove a Mazda3 wagon and tried to buy it that day...

Long-story-short: Hondas will last forever and there is every possible aftermarket option available for it... but in the end it's still a Honda Civic. The Mazda3 has more potential to be something great and there's a lot more there to work with, but you'll have to take care of it because it won't last forever like a Honda. I'll always have a Honda Civic for a secondary car...
